Dogs are truly remarkable creatures. Not only are they loyal companions, but they also have an innate sense of compassion and protection that extends beyond their own species. This was certainly the case for one rescue dog, who became a guardian and best friend to an orphaned foal.
Karla Swindle, the owner of S & K Quarter Horses in Fayette, Alabama, had to euthanize her 22-year-old mare, Sandy, a few years ago due to declining health. This was especially heartbreaking for Sandy’s foal, Tye, who was left orphaned at just 9 days old.
But Tye found an unlikely companion in Karla’s dog, Zip. Sensing the foal’s heartbreak, Zip stayed with Tye all night, comforting him with a sympathetic paw.
“[Zip] was laying there by his neck and the dog was whining, like crying,” she told the Lewiston Tribune, per IHeartDogs. “It just broke my heart.”
Despite losing his mother, Tye gained a new best friend in Zip, who quickly took on the role of the foal’s guardian. Karla believes that Zip adopted Tye as his baby and made sure he knew he wasn’t alone.
“Every time I would take off to the barn, Zip would run to the stall, and stand in front of the stall and wait for me to get there,” Karla told The Dodo. “He would beat me to the barn every time.”
Zip continued to look after Tye every day for weeks, eagerly waiting to see his friend every morning. Thanks to Zip’s care and friendship, Tye grew up to be a happy and healthy horse.
Although Tye has grown more independent and spends most of his time with his fellow horses, he and Zip will always have a special place in each other’s hearts. It’s heartwarming to see the bond between these two unlikely friends, and it’s a reminder of the capacity for kindness and love that exists in all animals.
